Twenty Leadership Questions for Building a City within the City Tuesday, January 16, 2007 Acts 29 & The Resurgence Regional (NW) Taught by Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church
  1. Building a city within the city.
    • The storyline of the Bible moves from a garden to a city with a garden.
    • God’s people are to aspire to live as a countercultural city that is an embassy of God’s kingdom.
      • Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
    • Our city within the city is to be for the benefit of the whole city.
      • Jeremiah 29:4–9 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the LORD.”
    • Nehemiah is an example of building a city within the city.
      • Nehemiah is a book not just about leadership, but about missional leadership as he labors to build a countercultural kingdom community amidst an opposing culture
      • The issue in Nehemiah is not just re-building a wall, but rather re-building a wall so that God’s people can have a safe place to gather as a city within the city
    • Three major themes run throughout the book of Nehemiah regarding his missional leadership.
      1. He has a confident humility.
      2. His confident humility comes from frequent prayer (1:4–11a; 2:4; 4:4–5; 5:19; 6:9, 14; 13:22b, 29, 31b).
      3. His confident humility enables him to give all credit to others and ultimately God for his success (2:8, 11–12, 20; 4:14–15, 20; 6:15–16; 7:5; 8:1).
