Theological Freebies from the Henry Center

Mark Driscoll
We recently had the honor of hosting my friend and one of my favorite authors, Dr. Don Carson. We titled his Saturday lectures and Sunday sermons at Mars Hill “A Day With Dr. Don.” (click for media) We are incredibly grateful for him serving us so well, and we look forward to publishing his lectures as a book for the Re:Lit line with our friends at Crossway. The event was a partnership event between Resurgence and our friend Owen Strachan and the rest of the team at the Henry Center. I know that many of our fans and friends may not be familiar with the Henry Center and some of their great resources, so I asked Owen to send me some details to share with you. His response is below:

What is it?

The Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL exists to bridge the gap between the church and the academy. In an age when many pastors focus solely on the practice of ministry to the exclusion of rich theology and engagement with Scripture, and many academicians disdain the church and ignore the people of God, the Henry Center seeks to bring the two parties together for mutual enrichment and the exchange of theological wisdom.

Who is Henry?

Inspired by theologian Carl F. H. Henry (1913-2003), an expert theologian who sought to edify and nourish the church through his body of work, the Center stages conferences, lectures and symposia that offer pastors edifying resources for the formation of a richly theological ministry, and scholars the opportunity to learn from wise pastors attuned to the needs of the church. The Center desires the strengthening of pastoral ministry even as it seeks the enrichment of scholarly ministry, believing that the church will be strongest when it possesses the resources of scholars; the academy will be healthiest when it serves and listens to the church. The Center was founded in 2006 and has been led by Doug Sweeney, a professor of church history at TEDS, since its inception. The Center offers as its core program the Scripture & Ministry Lectureship. At four points in the year, highly skilled pastors and theologians offer an hour-long lecture addressing a theological topic related to both the theology and practice of pastoral ministry. Past lecturers and free, downloadable talks include: Mark Dever, Re-ordering Friendship, Love & Enmity: A Biblical Reflection on Church Membership (Video) Phil Ryken, The Suffering and the Glory: Pastoral Ministry in Union with Christ (Video) David Wells, How, then, Should We Preach to the (Postmodern) World? (Video) Other notable media include: Don Carson, Is the Emergent Church Biblical? Debate featuring Bruce Ware, Wayne Grudem, Tom McCall, Keith Yandell, Do relations of authority and submission exist eternally among the Persons of the Godhead? (Video) Interview with Collin Hansen Young, Restless, and Reformed: A Discussion with Doug Sweeney The Center has staged international conferences in Peru, Hong Kong and Nairobi, and will host another in Tokyo in 2010. Those interested in learning more about the Center may visit the website, henrycenter.org, the Henry Center blog, and can sign up for the mailing list by emailing hctu@tiu.edu. Please also email the Center if you are interested in receiving a compilation CD of important lectures, and if you would like to receive The Trinity Symposium, a publication of the Center. The Center is led by Director Doug Sweeney, a professor of church history at TEDS, and Managing Director Owen Strachan, a PhD student at TEDS. So, thank you again to Dr. Don and our friends at the Henry Center for being such great gospel partners, and also giving away some great free online content we can help make known to our fans and friends.
