Atheist megachurches, marriage, and Grand Theft Auto V: Resurgence Roundup, 9/27/13
Sail through the flood of information with our weekly Resurgence Roundups. Each Friday, we will share a list of articles across ministry tribes that our team has found helpful with the hope of serving you well.
“The greatest entertainment launch in history,” by Tim Challies
It’s no secret: video games have been steadily outperforming movies when it comes to gross sales. This reality was reconfirmed when Grand Theft Auto V recently ushered in the greatest entertainment launch in history, grossing more than $1 billion dollars in two days.
Tim Challies shares an insightful difference between video games and movies: “movies allow us to watch violence and sexuality, but games allow us to experience and participate in these acts.” Check out the entire article to see what we should make of the realism created by Grand Theft Auto V and other video games.
“Millennials and marriage,” by Rachel Lu
The Public Discourse
Marriage is being redefined—again. But not in the way you’re probably thinking.
According to Rachel Lu, philosophy instructor at the University of St. Thomas, to many millennials “marriage seems in their minds to require a mysterious mixture of good fortune and good chemistry, perhaps combined with the social status that they hope to win through professional success.”
“Half of evangelicals believe prayer can heal mental illness,” by Bob Smietana
LifeWay
LifeWay recently polled the American people to see what they thought about mental illness and how to overcome it. Check out the rest of the article to see why Ed Stetzer is concerned about Christians’ views on mental illness.
“Atheism starts its megachurch: Is it a religion now?” by Katie Engelhart
Salon
Atheists are gathering together, preaching an undiluted secularist message, and modeling themselves after the church, but with one glaring difference. As one member explains, “‘The church model has worked really well for a couple of thousand years…What we’re trying to do is hold on to the bath water while throwing out the baby Jesus.’”
“Media misses the pope’s priorities,” by Janie Cheaney
World
Pope Francis is arguably one of the most covered people by the media. But in all of the media’s coverage, are they actually capturing his priorities, or establishing their own?
