Day 1 at R13: A recap

Resurgence » Conferences

Today has been an exciting day in Christ at R13.

We heard challenging and encouraging messages from Mark Driscoll, Crawford Loritts, Greg Laurie, and Matt Chandler live in Downtown Seattle. Their messages were broadcast live to over 1,500 people in Bellevue, WA; Reno, NV; Orlando, FL; and Albuquerque, NM. More than 15,800 people from 153 countries signed up to watch the live stream of the conference, and countless others joined us on social media.

Don’t sweat it if you missed the day’s activities.

Here’s a recap of some of our favorite photos and quotes from each speaker’s session.

You can also keep up with the R13 happenings on:

Remember to join us tomorrow at 7:55am PST by visiting one of our five locations or watching the conference via the free live stream.

Mark Driscoll

“There are people who have a form of religion, but they really don’t have redemption.”

“Christendom is dead. An experiment of 500 years is now over.”

“The day in which we live will require particularly strong faith. You young men: the most important day of your ministry is not the first day, it’s the last day.”

“Everything rises or falls with the gospel. Everything ultimately is a gospel issue.”

“‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel...’ You have to start there. You may be ashamed of things you’ve done, but we are not ashamed of what [Jesus has] done.”

Crawford Loritts

“Whatever God wants to give you, he’ll bring it to you.”

“Greatness is never the product of giftedness. Greatness is always the product of faithfulness.”

“Burnout in ministry takes place when there’s too much separation between what you do and your call from God.”

“Success is your biggest enemy in ministry. The problem with success is that it seduces you into self-reliance. You begin to trust the resource over the source.”

“Never prostitute your principles for affirmation.”

Greg Laurie

“In the end God, isn’t going to say ‘well done, good and successful servant,’ but, ‘well done, good and faithful servant.’”

“I never tried to have a big church. I tried to have a good church, a strong church, a healthy church. If we try to be the fastest-growing thing, there is a problem.”

“I have found that if you invest in the lives of people, well-feed sheep will reproduce themselves.”

“The pulpit is not a place to settle scores. It’s a place to preach the word of God.”

“If you can’t fall into sexual sin, you’re godlier than David, wiser than Solomon, and stronger than Samson.”

“When my son died, being a preacher didn’t help me on that day. I needed Jesus just like everyone else. I didn’t need a manual. I needed Emanuel.”

Matt Chandler

“You young men in ministry, if all you’ve got is ‘I don’t want to be that,’ then go sell insurance. You’re building a church only on what you don’t want to be, rather than on what God wants you to be.”

“You need aggression built on humility, not aggressiveness for the sake of being aggressive. This is confidence based on the fear of the Lord.”

“We need men who know they’re weak, and because they know they’re weak, they become strong.”

“When people come to Christ at your church, that’s you being marvelously helped by God.”

“One of the tell-tale signs of drifting away from weakness that God makes strength is when people become commodities, and when other people’s jobs are viewed as not nearly as important as the job you’re doing.”

“Dream big, work hard, and guard your heart.”
